Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Use of ARVs in Ugandan Poultry Farming

In a startling revelation, officials from the National Drug Authority (NDA) appeared before the Committee on HIV/AIDS and related matters today, confirming allegations that antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) have been used in poultry farming in Uganda. This revelation has sent shockwaves through the country and raised concerns about both ethical practices and public health.

Mr. Atumanya, representing the NDA, acknowledged the use of ARVs in the mixture of feeds by farmers but explained that the authority had been cautious about making public statements. He stated, "We also confirmed the use of ARVs in the mixture of feeds by farmers, but we couldn't rush to make statements in the public because this would lead to losses. Remember we export these feeds, chicken, and pork to other countries; this would kill our international market if such information is in circulation."

These allegations first came to light in July 2023 when a news story reported that "Chicken Laced With ARVs" was flooding the Ugandan market. The report cited a study conducted by Makerere University, revealing the presence of ARV drugs in chicken tissue and feed. This discovery raised significant concerns among consumers and prompted investigations.

In response to these allegations, the Poultry Association of Uganda released a statement affirming its commitment to ethical practices and compliance with industry norms and government regulations. The association emphasized its dedication to the welfare of poultry and the quality of products.

The Poultry Association categorically stated, "The use of ARVs to stimulate weight gain in poultry is not only unethical but also scientifically dubious. Importantly, it poses significant public health risks." They reassured the public that their members adhere to strict guidelines and regulations to ensure the safety and healthiness of poultry and its products.

The association acknowledged the role of the media in ensuring consumer safety and promoting ethical practices and urged for balanced representation of all industry players in reports. They also expressed concern about the potential impact of these allegations on ARV shortages in Uganda and its effects on those who genuinely need these medications.

To address these concerns, the Poultry Association pledged to intensify collaboration with regulatory bodies to guarantee full compliance among its members. They encouraged the public to maintain an open dialogue with them and promised transparency and accountability.
