Fire at Entebbe International Airport Warehouse Sparks Concerns Amidst Ongoing Flood Woes

Entebbe, Uganda - September 13, 2023 - Authorities at Entebbe International Airport are grappling with a persistent fire that engulfed one of the airport's warehouses housing crucial supplies from the National Medical Stores, including mosquito nets and vital drugs. The incident, which began on Tuesday night, has raised questions about the airport's preparedness for such emergencies.
The blaze prompted the evacuation of all personnel working at the warehouse, allowing fire brigades to tackle the challenging task of extinguishing the fire. As of now, the cause of the fire remains a mystery, leaving both airport staff and firefighting crews perplexed.
An anonymous airport employee expressed their concerns, stating, "Even up to now, we are failing to know the cause of the fire and why firefighters are struggling to contain it." This lack of information has only added to the anxiety surrounding the incident.
In response to the situation, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority released a statement via Twitter on Wednesday morning, downplaying the incident as minor. The authorities assured the public that they were diligently working to bring the situation under control.
This incident is not the first time that fire has threatened Entebbe Airport. Several years ago, aviation security was seriously jeopardized when a fire engulfed the fuel park in close proximity to runway 12/30. Immediate action was taken to mitigate the risk.
Adding to the challenges faced by Entebbe Airport is the recent flooding that occurred after a heavy downpour. This flooding has had a detrimental impact on the ongoing expansion and upgrade projects at the airport, further highlighting the need for comprehensive disaster management planning.
The combination of the warehouse fire and the recent flooding incidents raises questions about the airport's ability to handle emergencies effectively. Authorities are under increased scrutiny as they work tirelessly to resolve these issues and prevent further disruptions to airport operations.
As investigations into the cause of the warehouse fire continue and efforts to control the blaze persist, passengers and stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation at Entebbe International Airport, hoping for a swift resolution to these challenges.
