St. Henry’s College Kitovu Headteacher, Bro. Mugabo, Elected Vice President of African Confederation of Principals

Masaka City, Uganda – In a momentous achievement, Brother Augustine Mugabo, the esteemed Headteacher of St. Henry’s College Kitovu, has been elected as the Vice President of the African Confederation of Principals (ACP). This significant appointment was officially announced through a letter from ACP's CEO, Nicodemus Bore, on September 7th, 2023.

Bro. Augustine Mugabo secured his prestigious position during the ACP meeting convened at Esibayeni Lodge Matsapha in Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) on August 31st, 2023. Notably, Bro. Mugabo, who also serves as the chairperson of the Association of Secondary Schools Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU), is now tasked with representing the African continent within the international body of the International Confederation of Principals (ICP) whenever he is nominated or called upon by ACP.

In the official congratulatory letter from the African Confederation of Principals, it was stated: "On behalf of the African Confederation of Principals, I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your election as the New Vice President of this great confederation. ACP welcomes your election and, on behalf of the secretariat, wishes to congratulate ASSHU and the great teaching fraternity in Uganda. We confirm our undivided support to you and your entire team as you push the agenda of the African child and the African principal for the next 2 years."

Brother Augustine Mugabo, a 48-year-old educator, has served as the Headteacher of St. Henry’s College Kitovu, a government-aided boys' secondary school in Masaka City, for the past 18 years. Known for his dedication to English language and literature, he has consistently imparted knowledge and values to countless students.

Hailing from Kabwoko village in Masaka City, literature has been an integral part of his life, which he has instilled in his students throughout his teaching career. His educational journey began at Bishop Ddungu Primary School, followed by St. Johns Kabwoko and St. Charles Lwanga-Kasasa.

Bro. Mugabo's teaching journey commenced at the age of 17 when, upon completing senior four, he began teaching at St. Cecilia Girls' Primary School, Villa Maria, under government funding in 1992. Although his initial monthly salary was a modest 2000 Ugandan Shillings, his passion for teaching overshadowed financial considerations.

His educational pursuit led him to become a member of the Brothers of Christian Instruction, embarking on religious formation, which encompassed philology, philosophy, and biblical studies. From 1998 to 2000, he taught at Ibanda Secondary School, demonstrating his dynamic nature by subsequently moving to St. Edwards-Bukuumi in Kibaale District.

Furthering his academic credentials, Bro. Mugabo earned a Bachelor's degree in Arts with Education from Kyambogo University in 2005. During his first semester at the university, he dedicated 30 days to teaching at St. Leo’s-Kyegobe Secondary School in Fort Portal District.

Bro. Mugabo's remarkable journey eventually led him to St. Henry’s College Kitovu in 2005, where he began with 900 students. His unwavering commitment and passion for education saw him rise to the position of Deputy Headteacher, and eventually, Headteacher, a role he continues to excel in. He also pursued a Master's degree, which he completed in 2010 at Washington University, USA.

St. Henry’s College Kitovu, established in 1922, has had a total of 14 headteachers, with Bro. Augustine Mugabo being one of the finest leaders in the history of this esteemed institution. The college is renowned as one of the premier secondary schools in Uganda.

Bro. Mugabo's election as Vice President of the African Confederation of Principals not only reflects his personal dedication and achievements but also highlights Uganda's contribution to education leadership on the African continent. His role in ACP holds the promise of fostering collaboration and progress in education across the region.
