Uganda Sends 70 Delegates to UN General Assembly, VP Alupo And PM Nabbanja Clash

By Kundu Ronald

New York City - The ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has witnessed an unexpected clash between Vice President, HE Rt. Major Jessica Alupo, and Prime Minister Nabajja Robinnah of Uganda. This dispute arose as Uganda sent a staggering 70 delegates to the assembly, securing its position as the country with the most substantial representation.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appointed Vice President Jessica Alupo as Uganda's representative to the UNGA. However, tensions escalated when Prime Minister Nabajja arrived in New York with a substantial delegation of over 60 delegates from Uganda, creating uncertainty about the official spokesperson for the nation.

UNGA 78 is significant as it hosts the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit, where global leaders convene to reaffirm their commitment to the SDGs, marking the midway point to 2030. Additionally, the Climate Ambition Summit, which commenced on September 20, provides leaders with an opportunity to address the urgent climate crisis.

The extensive presence of Ugandan delegates has prompted inquiries regarding its economic impact on the nation. Reports indicate that each delegate costs a minimum of two million Ugandan shillings per night, resulting in an expenditure of over 140 million shillings of taxpayers' money. In contrast, some developed nations have dispatched no more than five delegates to represent their interests at the assembly.

The conflict between Alupo and Nabajja underscores the intricacies and challenges faced by countries during international gatherings of this magnitude. As UNGA 78 progresses, it is imperative to closely monitor developments and how Uganda manages its expansive delegation.
