Amelia Kyambadde Declares Retirement from Active Politics Ahead of 2026 Elections

In a surprising announcement, former Mawokota North Member of Parliament and former Minister for Trade and Industry, Anne Amelia Kyambadde, has revealed that she will not be participating in active politics for the 2026 elections.

Kyambadde's decision was communicated through an audio message shared in a WhatsApp group within the Mawokota North Constituency.

Despite being urged by numerous supporters to run for re-election in her constituency, Kyambadde expressed her belief that her time for active political engagement has come to an end. However, she emphasized that she remains committed to serving the population in different capacities.

Reflecting on her contemplation since the previous elections, Kyambadde stated, "I have made up my mind and decided, I will not contest again in the next general elections. At least as NRM, let us get a young person we can support. This does not take away my loyalty to the NRM."

Following her defeat in the last election to her close friend Hillary Kiyaga, popularly known as Hilderman, Kyambadde recognized that the prolonged stay of the ruling regime had generated frustration among the people, leading to their decision to vote for change.

In response to her loss, Kyambadde was promptly removed from the Ugandan cabinet and appointed as a special presidential advisor on trade and industry.

Her departure from active politics has left the NRM party in Mpigi District in a precarious position, as they now face limited options for selecting a suitable candidate to carry the party's flag in the upcoming general elections.

While some political analysts view Kyambadde's decision as a setback for the NRM party, opinion leaders in Mpigi District are acknowledging her choice to retire as an exemplary move for young politicians. They believe that her decision sets a precedent for retiring from active service and enjoying private life after serving the public.

Kyambadde's departure from the political scene undoubtedly marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Mawokota North and Mpigi District, leaving room for new contenders to emerge as the region prepares for the 2026 elections.
