Operation Shujaa: Uganda and DRC Forces Make Strides Against ADF Insurgency

By Our Reporter

KAMPALA- In a remarkable display of cross-border collaboration, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have jointly launched 'Operation Shujaa' to counter the threat posed by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). Since its initiation on November 30, 2021, the operation has achieved substantial success, marked by the recovery of 9500 rounds of ammunition and a significant blow to the ADF's capacity for warfare.

Commander of the UPDF Mountain Division and head of Operation Shujaa, Major General Dick Olum, asserted that the operation has effectively curtailed the ADF's ability to incite conflict. Maj Gen Olum remarked, “The ADF will soon become a chapter of the past. We have crippled their war-making capability, drastically reduced their manpower and weaponry, and severely dampened their morale."

The latest achievements were unveiled during an event at the UPDF Mountain Division Headquarters, Muhooti Barracks Fort Portal, where a cache of weaponry and equipment captured from the ADF was displayed. In addition to the ammunition, the joint operation has neutralized 548 ADF militants, apprehended 50 individuals, and led to the surrender of 31 terrorists as a result of relentless pressure.

Among the confiscated weaponry are 151 units, comprising 142 submachine guns (SMGs), 8 PMK Machine guns, and 1 60-millimeter mortar. Moreover, the forces retrieved 111 military radios, 45 radio charger ports, and 10 batteries from the ADF's inventory. Notably, the collaboration has yielded humanitarian results as well, with the rescue of 156 individuals, including women and children. The UPDF is currently providing medical care to the children, many of whom were in critical health condition.

Major General Dick Olum, the overall commander of Operation Shujaa, clarified that the reported figures only pertain to UPDF's acquisitions and records, excluding those secured by FARDC. He highlighted, "The figures represent what we have documented and currently possess within the UPDF. FARDC possesses ADF's weapons and equipment recovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), potentially doubling the figures we have provided."

Maj. Gen. Olum further elaborated, “Regarding ADF militants neutralized, we solely account for those whose bodies are recovered. Combatants who evade and perish in the wilderness are not included. Thus, the actual figures might be twice our current UPDF count.”

As Operation Shujaa presses forward, the joint forces continue to exhibit their dedication to eradicating the ADF insurgency through coordinated efforts, cross-border synergy, and unwavering determination.
