Police Investigate Fatal Motor Crash in Nakasongola District

Nakasongola, August 20, 2023 - The local authorities are currently probing the tragic motor crash that unfolded on Saturday night, claiming the lives of four individuals in Nakasongola district.

The incident transpired around 11:30 pm in the vicinity of Kikoona Nakitoma village along the Gulu-Kampala Highway. Involved in the collision were two vehicles: a Fuso Fighter lorry bearing license plate UBL 345A, and a Mercedes Benz trailer with license plates UAQ 108W/ UAY227P.

A statement from the police, issued on Sunday, August 20, conveyed preliminary information about the accident.

Initial investigations have indicated that the Mercedes Benz trailer, en route from Gulu to Kampala, veered unexpectedly into an unauthorized lane at Kikoona. This ill-fated maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with the Fuso lorry, according to Sam Twineamazima, spokesperson for the Savannah Division Police.

Regrettably, the collision led to the tragic and immediate demise of four individuals. The deceased have been identified as Kharim Abdul Walugembe (42) and Abbas Yiga, a passenger aboard the lorry. Two more victims, Adam Balyejusa (27) and an unidentified male passenger, also lost their lives.

The lone survivor, identified as Samuel Muwonge (40), the driver of the Mercedes Benz trailer, sustained injuries in the accident. Samuel Muwonge hails from Natete in Kampala district, the police revealed.

Upon receiving notification of the incident, law enforcement swiftly responded, arriving at the accident site to document and assess the situation. The injured party, Samuel Muwonge, was promptly transported to Nakasongola Health Centre IV for immediate medical care. Subsequently, he was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further treatment.

The deceased victims were transported to Nakasongola Health Centre IV mortuary to undergo postmortem examinations.

As of the current report, the wreckage of the involved vehicles remains at the scene, awaiting the arrival of tow trucks from Kampala to facilitate their removal. Authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances leading up to this tragic incident.

The community remains in mourning as they grapple with the loss of lives in this heartrending event. Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating crash.
