Bukedea District - The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has taken a significant step to improve healthcare accessibility in Bukedea District by establishing a teaching hospital. The hospital, currently in its final stages of construction, aims to provide specialized medical services to the local population while also serving as a medical school.

Situated in Bukedea Town Council, approximately 33 kilometers along the Mbale-Kumi highway, the hospital is designed to function as a regional referral center. This development is a response to the long-standing issue of Bukedea residents having to travel considerable distances to access quality medical care.

Bukedea District has been grappling with a lack of specialized healthcare services, with the highest-ranking facility in the area being a government health center IV catering to a population of nearly 300,000. The current healthcare infrastructure has been hindered by various challenges, including drug shortages, limited staff, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient equipment.

Mr. Odongo Samuel Afro from the Anita Foundation emphasized, "The hospital's capacity as a regional referral center will directly address the issue of Bukedea residents having to travel far distances for better treatment."

The upcoming hospital is expected to offer a wide range of medical services, including specialized treatments in fields like gynecology, orthopedics, and surgery. It will feature both general treatment options and ample bed facilities to handle emergencies and intensive care cases.

The project is also expected to boost the local economy by creating numerous job opportunities, with a focus on hiring individuals from Bukedea District.

The hospital is on track to become operational in January 2024 and will be accompanied by the establishment of the Bukedea Institute of Health Sciences, a medical school offering certificates and diplomas in nursing, midwifery, and medical laboratory technology.

Residents of Bukedea District have expressed their gratitude to Ms. Among, who not only serves as the Speaker of Parliament but also represents the district as the Woman Member of Parliament. The establishment of the teaching hospital and medical school is seen as a crucial investment that addresses both healthcare needs and human resource development.

Ms. Among's commitment to improving healthcare services in the region is evident in her previous contributions, including the provision of modern ambulances for medical emergencies, organizing medical camps in collaboration with medical student associations, and lobbying for upgraded health facilities.

In a statement, Ms. Among remarked, "The government has taken significant steps to bring healthcare services closer to the people. As leaders, it is our responsibility to bridge the remaining gaps and ensure accessible and affordable healthcare for all."

The establishment of the teaching hospital marks a significant milestone in Bukedea District's healthcare landscape, promising improved services and training opportunities for medical professionals in the region.
