President Museveni Reflects on September's Significance During 79th Birthday Celebration

In a heartfelt address during his 79th birthday celebration at Kololo Independence grounds, President Yoweri Museveni took a moment to reflect on the significance of September in his life and the history of Uganda. The event, organized by a group of enthusiastic youths led by Hadijah Uzeiye Namyalo, the National Coordinator in the Office of the NRM National Chairman, was not only a celebration of the President's remarkable journey but also an opportunity to honor the NRA fighters who played a pivotal role in the Katonga battle.

President Museveni began by reminiscing about two pivotal moments in the month of September that hold a special place in his heart. The first was in 1972 when, at the age of 28, he and his comrades launched an attack on Mbarara from Tanzania. However, this operation was marred by poor planning, resulting in significant losses. Museveni acknowledged that while it was a significant September in his life, it was a somber one due to the sacrifices made.

The second September that President Museveni highlighted was in 1985, during the Battle of Katonga against government forces. This event marked one of the decisive moments in the NRA bush war, ultimately leading to the capture of power by the National Resistance Army in 1986.

During his address, President Museveni emphasized that the turmoil Uganda experienced before the NRA's victory in 1986 could have been avoided if leaders at the time had heeded the voice of the people. He expressed regret that the nation endured unnecessary suffering due to sectarianism and a lack of willingness to engage in negotiations and peaceful resolutions.

Museveni's recollection of Uganda's troubled history reminded the audience of the tumultuous years since the country's independence in 1962. This period witnessed political shifts, coups, and dictatorships, leading to instability and unrest.

Today, President Museveni believes that Uganda has achieved stability, and the focus has shifted toward social and economic transformation. He called upon all citizens to actively participate in the money economy by engaging in commercial agriculture, services, industries, and information and communication technology (ICT). The President emphasized that this is the new battle—to eradicate poverty from every household and uplift the entire nation.

As Uganda marks this important milestone in President Museveni's life and reflects on its history, there is a shared hope for continued progress, development, and peace in the years ahead.
