Here's a List of 22 Primary Teacher Training Colleges (PTCs) Phased Out by Government

Kampala, (UG): The Ministry of Education in Kampala announced on Friday that the government has taken the decision to discontinue operations at 22 Primary Teacher Training Colleges (PTCs) nationwide. These institutions will now be repurposed to offer different educational programs.

According to Education Minister Janet Museveni, this move to phase out these institutions comes after extensive consultations with various stakeholders. She emphasized that the actual transformation of these colleges will depend on the availability of financial resources.

Among the affected colleges, one will be transformed into a senior secondary school, five will become health training institutions, six will serve as campuses for different public universities, three will focus on TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) skills, one will become a TVET Agro-Vet institution, two will be designated as health tutors’ training institutions, and four will become instructor training institutions.

First Lady Janet Museveni addressed concerns about the impact on students who studied at these PTCs, stating, "You may be wondering what will happen since some of the primary Teacher Training Colleges where you studied from your Grade III are among the twenty-two PTCs being phased out. We have agreed to come up with a plan that will allow those who wish to retake their examinations to do so at the remaining 23 core PTCS."

The Minister also emphasized the importance of ensuring that ongoing reforms under the National Teacher Policy 2019 do not negatively affect current students in teacher training institutions. Additionally, the education ministry has called on Kyambogo University to collaborate closely with key stakeholders to promptly adopt the National Teacher Policy 2019.
